Scholarship Background and Intent

Buster was a lifelong Rockford area resident. He and his wife, Mary, were both educators in the Rockford Public School District. They raised their three children—Brad, Steve, and Julie—to diligently pursue higher education after graduating from Jefferson High School, where Buster taught, coached, and was athletics director for 35 years.

Throughout the early years of Buster's own athletic career in high school and college, he displayed hard work, perseverance, and his determination. These traits carried him through leadership roles in an outstanding basketball, baseball, and cross-country career in high school and college. As a teacher, multiple-sport coach, and athletics director at Jefferson High School, Buster positively influenced countless young lives. He would continually talk with his students about the values of love, respect, and thoughtfulness for others.

Buster loved and supported Jefferson High School athletics and athletes until the day he died, May 11, 2002. The intent of this scholarship is to honor him by supporting an athlete from Jefferson High School who will benefit from financial support.
