What if we could endow the nonprofit sector?

Imagine a future where nonprofits throughout northern Illinois have the permanent financial resources to sustain their missions for generations to come.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity and vision of Janet Kjellstrom, that future is within reach!

Through the endowment she left the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, Janet is making possible an exciting new endowment challenge designed to help local nonprofits build permanent endowments of their own.

Modeled after CFNIL’s successful Carroll H. Starr Endowment Challenge, this new program is expected to launch in spring 2027 and will offer matching funds to eligible nonprofits serving Boone, Ogle, Stephenson, and Winnebago counties.

FAQs About the Kjellstrom Family Endowment Challenge

Consider the potential benefits of the challenge:

  • Janet's endowment could generate approximately $160,000 annually in matching funds — and that amount has the potential to grow!
  • That's enough to provide four $40,000 matching grants each year.
  • With a 3-to-1 fundraising match, those grants could help establish four new $160,000 nonprofit endowments annually.
  • That's 40 endowments in 10 years. 120 endowments in 30 years.
  • And the potential to keep building nonprofit endowments forever!

Imagine the lasting impact of hundreds of permanent endowments supporting the organizations that make northern Illinois a better place to live.

We're putting the finishing touches on this exciting opportunity, including eligibility requirements, matching formulas, and application details.
