Community Grant to Milestone supports upgrades for x-ray equipment
Milestone, Inc. was founded in 1971 by a group of concerned parents of adult children with developmental disabilities who were frustrated by the lack of living centers available for their children. Since that time, it has grown to become Winnebago and Boone Counties’ largest provider of residential, developmental, vocational, and social support services for adults and children with mental retardation, autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy.
During the 1990s, Milestone struggled to find sufficient dental services for their patients. Thanks to funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services, Milestone established its own dental clinic in Rockford, with the call to serve people with developmental disabilities in 13 counties in northern Illinois. Today, the clinic serves over 4,000 patients and completes over 500 patient visits per month.
X-rays taken during routine exams often help clinic staff prevent future dental problems. Over time, upgrades to x-ray technology rendered the equipment currently used by Milestone’s dental clinic obsolete. CFNIL was pleased to award Milestone $25,000 in the 2018 Community Grants Program cycle. These funds will help replace and update Milestone’s dental clinic x-ray equipment, helping keep patients’ smiles healthy for years to come!
