Now accepting applications for the Richard J. Schnell Memorial Scholarship

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is now accepting applications for the Richard J. Schnell Memorial Scholarship.

Applicants must:
– Be enrolled in an American Dental Association accredited dental or dental hygiene program, or a graduate post-doctoral program, for the upcoming school year;
– Be attending a two- or four-year college or university in the state of Illinois, or the Indiana University School of Dentistry; and
– Show evidence of financial need.

Richard John Schnell was born in Springfield, Illinois and grew up in Pecatonica. He was a 1946 graduate of St. Louis University’s Doctor of Dental Surgery degree program. He served in the United States Army before earning a master’s of science degree from Indiana University and serving as a professor in the dental school’s Department of Dental Materials for nearly four decades.

Dr. Schnell was an internationally recognized scientist and educator, with numerous publications in scientific journals, and contributions to several dental textbooks. He was a member of the International Association for Dental Research and the American Association for Dental Research. At the dental school, he was well known as a skillful and empathetic mentor of graduate level students.
